What is BaaS/DRaaS?
BaaS stands for Back-up as a Service. BaaS can be explained as the method of backing up files, folders, or even entire hard drives to a remote cloud-based data centre via a network connection.
DRaaS stands for Disaster Recovery as a Service. This takes BaaS a step further by implementing cloud backups into Disaster Recovery methods or plans.
Why is Backup as a Service Important?
Data is the backbone of every organisation. 60% of companies that lose critical data shut down within 6 months of the loss. Its therefore clear that data and by extension of that, the backing-up of data is hugely important for modern-day organisations.
Why Are Organisations Choosing It?
Reduced Cost – BaaS utilises cloud-based backups. This tends to reduce cost by reducing the need for on-site infrastructure and the cost of upkeeping hardware on-premise, which is a big reason why organisations are making the change to BaaS.
Spread the Cost – Instead of having to pay a large up-front cost of servers and other backup equipment, with BaaS via cloud backups, organisations pay a monthly or annual subscription which spreads the cost of their backup solution across the duration of a contract.
Rest Assured Everything is Backed Up in the Cloud – It’s always nice to know that things are taken care of. BaaS hands over the responsibility of the backup to experienced and knowledgeable providers such as Veeam. They have all the measures in place to assure that your data is safe and secure in the cloud.
Access to Backups Anywhere Anytime – As the backup is in the cloud rather than a physical location, you can access your data anywhere at any time; that’s the beauty of the cloud. Reduces infrastructure footprint – A lot of organisations are doing more to become sustainable. Cloud backups reduce your infrastructure footprint. In the same way as using public transport rather than driving your own vehicle reduces your carbon footprint, implementing hosted cloud backups from a provider such as Veeam reduces your organisation’s infrastructure footprint.
The Future of Disaster Recovery is Cloudy
What Does Cloudy Mean?
Cloudy, in this context, simply means having at least some element of data being stored within the cloud.
Veeam have conducted some really in-depth research into DRaaS. They have uncovered that there is a trend of more and more organisations using cloud for Disaster Recovery.
Why Are More Organisations Using DRaaS?
Frees Up Internal IT Resources – As you will know, internal IT resources are finite therefore having backups handled externally frees up your IT department to focus on other areas. Many organisations find this incredibly appealing.
The Expertise of the Provider – An added benefit of DRaaS is that the company providing your cloud backup will offer their expertise to you and assist in developing a Disaster Recovery plan regarding your hosted backup(s).
Cost – Again, cost plays a big factor in why organisations are switching to cloud DRaaS. In the same way, as BaaS tends to reduce and spread cost, DRaaS works in the same way.
